Being a yoga teacher is so much more than teaching people to stand on one leg, breathe out of one nostril, do sun salutations or even do headstands. Teaching yoga is about guiding others to freedom or pure liberation; liberation from fear, ego and self. Each time one soul is set free, the consciousness of the entire planet is elevated.
Last night, as students were filing out of my Ashtanga yoga class, I was reminded of the true joy of being a yoga teacher. It was the first time I had taught that class at that time so most of the faces were new.
A gentleman, who had been visiting from Philadelphia with his wife stopped to say thank you and added, "I bet I am the first double lung transplant you have had." He went on to share how when he was in the hospital three years ago, he caught a glimpse on television of girls in bathing suits doing yoga on a beach somewhere. Somehow, his soul knew yoga was going to be his path to recovery. His limitations had been lifted.
Another young woman, who I have taught before was lit up like a Christmas tree. She beamed as she let me know that was the first time she had come up into headstand ever. It wasn't that she was bragging, it was that she was inspired. Her soul knew that her journey has just begun. Her limitations had been lifted.
Yoga is more than a way to free the body, it is a skillful and practical means to understanding 'thy will be done.' If you believe you can do something, you can do it. If you believe that it cannot be done, you will never do it. All it takes is one person to believe in you, to help you believe in yourself.
Whether you need to mend an emotionally broken heart, a spiritually broken heart devoid of faith, a physically damaged heart, or an intellectually closed heart lacking in hope, yoga is the purest path to an open, vibrant, healthy and radiating heart. As a yoga teacher, remember, it doesn't matter who is in your class or why they think they are there, know they are there to find, fix, mend or strengthen their heart. Through this, they will discover happiness, bliss and liberation.
I am grateful for every opportunity I have to teach yoga. More than being the teacher, I am the student. Yesterday I was reminded that I do not need to have any expectations for students, but belief in the true healing powers of yoga. When you see someone suffering physically, emotionally, spiritually or intellectually encourage them to try yoga. Your belief is enough to set them free from suffering and thereby elevate the consciousness of the planet.
