Conquer and Convert Your Negative Thoughts!

Man is his own worst enemy.
- Cicero

All things co-exist on mutual helpfulness rather than antagonism. It is so easy to look outside of ourselves and pass blame when things are not going smoothly. Most of us can clearly recognize when we feel friction or resistance that involves another person.

The secret to a Happy, Healthy and Fit life is learning to recognize our own self-defeating behavior patterns. The relationship between our own thought patterns and goals is often one of antagonism and outright hostility. The trick is to notice when our thoughts don't line up are not leading us to our desired outcome.

Maybe you are stuck in a job that you don't enjoy, a body that isn't serving you or a relationship that drains you. When you are living in conflict, it is impossible to live an inspired life. The stress you are feeling is actually closing off your heart. That tightness that you feel is truly a slow down in the flow of blood; resulting in the slowing down of energy. As the blood slows down, it stagnates and decays resulting in heart disease.

The best way to eliminate your enemy is to turn him into your friend. Become your own best friend and remove the thoughts and actions from your life that hold you back. When your mind, body and soul are aligned and moving as one, your spirit will be ignited and your life will be one full of passion, fun and peace in your heart.

Begin with the End in Mind: Be the Shiny Apple!

“The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” - Chinese proverb

One shiny apple can teach us so much. Often we are guilty of looking at finished products and judging them. Take for example something as simple as an apple. It's easy to go to the store pick one out, enjoy it and not think much more about it. The truth is that apple is a warrior. It is the result of years of cultivation, planting, clearing and harvesting before it can be enjoyed.

It is easy to take the work for granted. However, the tree that produced that fruit wasn't always a tree. When you reflect deeper, you recognize that the tree came from a seed, grew into a sapling, then had to grow for years into a tree before it could produce any fruit. It may have had to fight off winter freezes, pests and animals to name a few obstacles encountered in an effort to produce massive abundance.

What does this have to do with being Happy, Healthy and Fit? As an avid yoga practitioner, I often receive compliments on my practice. Then I hear a comparison. I gently say- Keep practicing and you will get there. I smile and in my heart I know it's true. I started practicing yoga in 1997. It's hard to believe, it has been 13 years. I can assure you that if you commit to anything with passion and discipline for 13 years you will turn heads too. You will be a Warrior. You will be a Pro! I assure you the time will pass anyway. Before you can be the shiny apple, you must be willing to plant the seed, make a commitment and go through the transformation. Remember, the second best time is now!

Small Change adds up to Big Change

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Lao-tzu, The Way of Lao-tzu Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC)

The quickest way to get Happy, Healthy and Fit is to get started!

My Dad likes to say that pennies make nickels, nickels make quarters and quarters make dollars. In essence small change makes Big change. We would all like to start a business and have it make $1 Million right away, but the money will come as a result of a focused goal, discipline and doing the work.

The same is true of your Happy, Healthy and Fit goals. Start by setting a goal and making small changes. Eventually, they just as those pennies turn into dollars, your efforts will produce results.

Some easy small changes you can make every day are:
1. Drink 1 extra glass of water.
2. Eat half a piece of cheese instead of the whole thing.
3. Enjoy your sandwich open faced with one slice of bread instead of two.
4. Before you turn on the television at night, walk to the end of your driveway and then maybe over to your neighbor's driveway and back.
5. Look in the mirror and smile at yourself at least once a day.

Individually, these changes are equivalent to a penny, but together you already have a nickel and we know what nickels make. So go ahead, set a goal, discipline yourself and enjoy the journey! Take that first step!

Expose Your Live Wires and Plug In!

Today's Blog was totally inspired by the movie Avatar. If you haven't seen it. Go see it!

You know you have made a real connection with someone on a deeper level when you float away from the conversation. You feel whole, complete and plugged in.

Electricity is something most of us can't explain, yet we understand the power of the connection. A blender is just a fixture on the counter until it plugs in. It will collect dust and occupy space on its own. Once plugged in, it is capable of many amazing things. We are the same. Our body is a vessel until we learn to plug into other people and make those real connections. Our own light comes on when we learn to share.

Powerful connections are rooted in trust. Only when we feel a sense of trust are we willing to pull back the protective layers and expose our live wires; our hearts. When we learn to connect with others from the heart, we are no longer two, but become one.

The moment we understand that we are all the same, the only thing unique about any of us are our flaws, is the moment that we can expose our live wires and plug into the infinite powers of connection. A blender plugged in can make amazing creations. A blender left unplugged will end up at a garage sale and then in a landfill. Start to plug in!

Compassion: Past the Skin into the Heart

It is so much easier to be happy, healthy, fit and balanced when you approach life with a strong sense of compassion. Living with Compassion is about learning to put on super special 3D glasses that let you look past the level of the skin and into the hearts of others.

Everyone protects their heart differently. Some people invest in lots of plastic surgery to make a smooth, polished exterior. Others choose to raise their imaginary porcupine quills to protect themselves. There are many shells in between: tough guy, mean girl, rude guy and snobby girl to name a few. These are all personalities taken on to cover up insecurity.

When we tear down the layers, we learn that insecurity results from unresolved childhood issues. It is easy to have compassion when you realize that those living with a shell are blocking their hearts, not just from one person, but from the whole world full of love.

Want to experience compassion? Learn to soften your own shell and smile. A warm smile has been known to melt even the coldest heart.

Peace of Mind vs. Piece of Mind

Next time you want to give someone a piece of your mind, consider giving them a piece of your "peace of mind" instead.

When blessed with opportunity to spend time with older people, it is common to find they all want the same thing- Peace of Mind. The great news is that it is available to all of us and just a decision away.

Have you ever spent time around someone who tells the same story over and over again to anyone who will listen? And then, they get escalated and pissed off at the same spot in the story every single time. Since our brains can't tell the difference between when it really happened and when it is just being repeated, as a story, our bodies react with the same mechanism. Anger creates toxins in the mind and body. Your thoughts alone are enough to turn your body into a toxic wasteland.

The secret to a calm and happy life is not to take things personally and get shifted by others. When you learn to become an observer and participant in your own movie of life you accept each situation as an Act in your movie. It's your life and your movie. Are you creating a drama, horror, comedy or love story?

Meet everybody and every circumstance on the battlefield of life with the courage of a hero and the smile of a conqueror.

Harvest Lasting Kindness

Part of being Happy, Healthy and Fit is learning to truly appreciate the little things in life. The little things are when someone moves their yoga mat over to make a little extra room, or pays you a nice compliment. When the grocery clerk smiles and the bank teller remembers your name. Begin to notice all the little things throughout your day that are day making experiences. You will find that most of your fulfillment comes from intangible things. Close your eyes and practice receiving a kind word. Feel your face soften as even your heart smiles. If you love how this feels, approach each day like a farmer of kind words. The more you plant, the more you will harvest.

Respond to Life with Grace

Truly the only thing we can control in life is how we react or respond to situations and people. When you truly believe that there is a lesson everywhere you will become your own best teacher. Yesterday, I went to teach a yoga class and wanted to deliver a strong message about not being so attached to the outcome of things. 4 minutes before class I was informed that the studio iPod had blown up. First, a brief moment of panic and then I asked for help.

The things is I don't have an iPod and I don't know much about music. I prefer to hit play and teach yoga. Another teacher was kind enough to lend me hers. Trouble is, it was an iTouch and I had no idea how to use it. Every ounce of me wanted to apologize to the class when suddenly I realized that bringing attention to the situation would alter the experience for everyone.

At one point, I just selected a song to make something play and low and behold on came a Mariachi band. I just kept teaching with confidence and hoped no one would notice. When I exhaled the panic, I was able to relax and make an adjustment and picked it right back up. I chose to make up for the music being off by making sure to touch and adjust every person in some way. When it was over, everyone left and said they had an amazing class.

I learned the lesson I wanted to teach. Expect the unexpected and respond with Grace to what life gives you. And thanks to Gracie for her iTouch.

Tune into Your Body

Learn to listen to your body. We all have a built in mechanism that determines the truth from non-truth. The more in tune you are with your body, the more tuned in you will be to the this higher frequency sometimes called intuition or the sixth sense. In Kung Fu, we train to exhaust the body and then exhaust the the mind. When you have eliminated the distractions, you can tune into your spirit. This is where self-awareness comes in. You start to notice more, first in the physical realm. You may start to notice things like street signs that you pass every day, but never noticed. Keep on your training path and you will start to notice what other people are saying before they even say it. When you really tune into feelings, you can sense bigger things. Your body is a receiver. It's your work to tune in for clarity. Start to notice what you notice. Only then will you know what make you feel Happy, Healthy and Fit!

True Happiness in Helping Others

Living in a material world, it is easy to forget that Lasting Fulfilment comes from inside and not outside. By nature, we are all material seekers. We actually think the new car, new house or new shoes will make us happy. It is true that they will bring a bout of initial pleasure. However, the other side of pleasure is pain. When you begin to worry about paying for the new house or car, or your shoes get scuffed, then you no longer own them. They own you. They dominate your thoughts and drive a wedge between you and your happiness. Not to say we should not enjoy nice things. Just be aware of the process.

True happiness comes from helping other people to feel better about themselves. You know you have arrived when you can do this without any expectations in return. We all have our work to do, but I would like to share how I personally experienced this yesterday. In order to receive, we must soften and be approachable. Remove the exterior shell of your ego. When I went to take a yoga class yesterday, a woman told me that she had checked the schedule to see when else I teach because she had the most Amazing weekend after experiencing my Friday afternoon class. It really made my day. Mostly because it wasn't about me, but my message. Later last night, I was leaving a study group Kabbalah class and two people actually reached out to stop and ask me if I was coming back for Phase 2. I said I hadn't decided and they begged me telling them that I was their teacher and created a comfortable environment for sharing. I had never talked to them before this. It really made my night and I am still floating. They have their work and I have mine. We can all take our walls down and enjoy transformation together.

I share that not to impress you, but to impress upon that we all have Light and energy to share. Find someone to receive your light and you will experience the most incredible feeling of happiness.

Cars, homes and shoes will come and go, but the ripple of effecting positive change in the universe is infinite. Today, like Gandhi says- Be the change you wish to see in the world!

Happy, Healthy and Fit is a holistic approach to real happiness. When your health is compromised, it is all consuming. Poor health and disease can be a result of not taking care of your body or a result of not taking care of your mind. Disease comes from Dis-ease of mind or body. Happiness is the best prevention out there! Small changes in routine result in Big Changes in Feeling. For example, you can choose to act with more patience and less anger. You will be amazed how this makes you the Winner. Today practice conserving your energy for growth and not wasting it creating poison. Next time someone asks you how you are doing, just practice saying- I am Happy, Healthy and Fit!

Spring into Spring

Yesterday was the Spring Equinox. Twice a year we get equal parts light and dark in the day. It's a powerful time for setting an intention. It is said there is no such thing as darkness, only lack of light. Think about it.... the sun never sets. It's always shining somewhere although we cannot see it. Know you can always tap into this amazing source of Light for inspiration. I rang in Spring doing 108 Sun Salutations at Urban Yoga in Phoenix. It was a clear ritual to set an intention for new beginnings. Spring is when all things in nature begin to wake up and come alive. It's time!

New Beginnings

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. It is not necessary or sensible to hang onto the past. Each morning, we get the choice to be happy or not. Either way, we get the same amount of time. I take today to mourn the closing of a chapter in my life. The best part is that we all write our own scripts and can include tragedy, comedy, love and drama as we wish. Life is like a great book that you cannot put down because you are so excited to see what happens next.
